Priem Again

Old 3 Wat zal het mooi staan achter mijn zetbok én vogelkooitje ♡

Cookbook of my dear Granny

This cookbook is dear to me. It is my little granny's cookbook and she received it from the head of the orphanage. I have written before about this orphanage.

The book was completely torn apart and was laminated. This is a horror to bookbinders: adhesive plastic and tape in a book. Many years ago I had it restored by a nice bookbinder in Breda. Restoration is not something I am fond of.

The slipcase I have made myself, also a couple of years ago. The book has a rounded spine and the slipcase is adjusted to it.

On the blank pages, my grandmother wrote her own recipes. As a child I have tasted the Chipolata Pudding many times. It was one of her best recipes. I also inherited her pudding mold, so who knows, I might rise to the occasion and make one myself. If I do I will definitely write a post about it!

Poetry album

Just the other day at my parents place, I came across my grandmother's poetry album. Wow, what a beauty! Beautiful handwritten texts, beautiful pictures and lots of handmade drawings. Such a pity I write so little these days! Mostly numbers for measuring and lots of sketches.

For this blog post I tried to find inspiration in my own poetry album, but it's not so special compared to that beautiful album of grandma. Although I found one funny noteworthy entry. I can still remember the day my grandfather was babysitting me and wrote a piece in it, together with a sticker from the local butcher. Nowadays I can laugh about it, but at that time I was a furious 6-year-old girl.

Special wedding album plus a church spotted

An album high on the list to be written about. The wedding album of my parents. Very simple, but because of that very special. No translucent or cobweb pages, photos in black and white and beautifully positioned on each page. For their wedding, a befriended photographer of my father shot and developed the photos, and made the album.

Yesterday I was on an unplanned trip to Breda.
And because Guusje is the best church tower (and airplane and bus) spotter in the world, the most beautiful church of NL did not escape her spotting eyes ;-)!
(must be my roots, I always have to look to the left when I'm driving into Breda;-))

Sources of inspiration

Besides creating new photo albums, I am also very interested in beautiful old ones.
The big album belongs to my father. A wonderful fun album!
Grandma used to curl my dad's hair every morning ;-).
It's an album now 70 years old, full of small black and white pictures. Containing lots of photo corners scattered loose.
Photos are missing from the album, because they were on parade on my grandmothers cabinet.
And as you can see, the old white translucent paper degraded (acidified) over time and turned yellow.

The small album, which belonged to my grandfather, served as inspiration for a fun project I am currently working on.
Once I finish it and nice pictures can be made, I will blog about it.

(C)Old and Beautiful in
the Efteling

On the coldest day in March since 1916, we paid the Efteling a visit.
As a little girl I used to come here very often, because living in Breda means the Fairytale Forest is very nearby.

In the right bottom picture you can see me together with my dad, the photographer of the family!
I still own a beautiful photo album from my youth with fantastic black and white pictures. Each piece developed in my dad's photo development room. It was super exciting as a little girl to climb up all the stairs up to the attic. Often I had to wait outside this room untill the coast was clear.
It was always a fantastic experience to watch the development of photos. The emergence of images on paper, pure magic.

Today it was Guusje's turn to be pictured on the mushroom. And me being the photographer.
These last 2.5 years, my dad has shot the most beautiful pictures of Guusje, unfortunately not in black and white anymore.

Special marriage certificate book!

Talking about a special marriage certificate book: my parent's one! That's right, my roots are in Breda and I'm very proud of that ;-). But I have to admit: I used to be the one proclaiming I would never ever leave Breda.
Truth is: I have lived almost 18 years in Leiden and now temporarily in Leiderdorp. Yet it always feels like coming home whenever I'm driving into Breda and see this beautiful church. And what a nice marriage certificate books they had way back in 1969 in Breda!

Beautiful book with a special story!

My grandmother was almost 9 years old when her mother died while giving birth to her ninth child. Her father could not care for all children, so she came to live in the orphanage in “de Oude Vest” in Breda. In a very stately building. My grandmother has always spoken very lovingly about the orphanage and the Mother of the orphanage. On the day she turned 18 and left the orphanage she got this little booklet along and cherished it her entire life. Someday, I will give it to Guusje.

From the archives

If you're like me, you just have to admire how beautiful these marriage certificates were in the early days! No staples, but solid sewn.
The copy you see here is the one from my grandparents. Look how neatly their names and all other relevant information was handwritten into the certificate.
And pay special attention to the cautionary advice on the front of the certificate: “It is of the utmost importance to handle this booklet with care”.
